NY Times: All Aboard an App for Suburban New York Commuters

Oh man, I love it when technology just works. I had to go into New York City today to record narration for my coming PBS “Nova” miniseries, “Making Stuff.” As I stood in Grand Central Station, flipping through the microscopic print of the Metro-North commuter-train timetable leaflet, I wished, again, that someone would just make a Metro-North iPhone app already. I remember looking for such a thing a few months back, and finding nothing. But today I checked again, and now there are at least two such apps, both free. I downloaded the one called OnTime, and it’s fantastic. It asks you one question: What are the two stations of your usual commute? After that, just the simple act of opening the app shows you the next train. Automatically. Complete with details like peak or off-peak, duration, stops and so on. And of course all the subsequent trains for the day. And one more tap shows you the return-train information. Beautiful, efficient, time-saving and free. I know this post isn’t for everyone (it’s for people who take Metro-North in Connecticut and New York). But I just showed the app to a fellow Metro-North passenger and he flipped. Thought I’d pass it along.

I love this app’s simplicity, but it’s worth pointing out that it is supported by advertising, and the pop-up ads can be annoying. It costs $3 to upgrade to remove the ads. The upgrade also allows it to output results as a PDF.
