The new version of iXpenselt has been optimized for the current-generation iPhone/iPad, and has a compelling modern look and feel. iXpenseIt was one of the first 500 apps to be approved for the App Store back in 2008, and has steadily built a reputation for quality, convenience and functionality.
Read MoreOh man, I love it when technology just works. I had to go into New York City today to record narration for my coming PBS “Nova” miniseries, “Making Stuff.” As I stood in Grand Central Station, flipping through the microscopic print of the Metro-North commuter-train timetable leaflet, I wished, again, that someone would just make a Metro-North iPhone app already. I remember looking for such a thing a few months back, and finding nothing. But today I checked again, and now there are at least two such apps, both free. I downloaded the one called OnTime, and it’s fantastic. It asks you one question: What are the two stations of your usual commute? After that, just the simple act of opening the app shows you the next train. Automatically. Complete with details like peak or off-peak, duration, stops and so on. And of course all the subsequent trains for the day. And one more tap shows you the return-train information. Beautiful, efficient, time-saving and free. I know this post isn’t for everyone (it’s for people who take Metro-North in Connecticut and New York). But I just showed the app to a fellow Metro-North passenger and he flipped. Thought I’d pass it along.
Read MoreFYI Decision, which is free for iOS, is a great alternative to ChoiceMap and Decision Buddy. The app works in similar ways, using a slider system for rating how much each of the influencing factors should weigh into the decision. But this app’s strength is that it displays the results more visually, with charts that show how your ratings affected the recommended outcome. If you’re choosing a car to buy, for example, you can see how your concern about price would affect the available models. I love this app’s simplicity, but it’s worth pointing out that it is supported by advertising, and the pop-up ads can be annoying. It costs $3 to upgrade to remove the ads. The upgrade also allows it to output results as a PDF.

Read MoreI travel for business quite a bit and any business traveler will tell you that if you forget to expense something, you're usually out of luck. That means that you eat the expense without even realizing it. Most companies can only reimburse you for the expenses you submit. So if you forget to submit something you don't get reimbursed for it. I'm lucky that my company uses American Express for tracking any expenses charged to our individual corporate cards. However, there are many times that I have to pay cash for things such as Taxi rides.
Read MoreiXpenseIt - In my opinion, an expense tracking and budgeting software program that appeals to all users for all purposes simply does not exist. It would be difficult to define all the small details required of a one-size-fits-all due to the individual differences in personal budgeting styles. However, I believe iXpenseIt, by FYI Mobileware Inc. comes as close to a OSFA for iPhone users as possible so far. As a mobile expense tracker, it offers mass appeal to business users and meets the demand of most users who simply want a way to record everyday spending to track their personal budget.

Consider an app like iXpenseIt ($4.99 for full version, free for iXpenseIt Lite), where you can track your spending according to type or by date. iXpenseIt is particularly useful if you accrue a lot of expenses for work: The app allows you to record mileage and also has a picture-taking feature to compile receipts. It even generates reports for easier reimbursement from your employer. Plus, the app is password protected -- always a good idea where financial matters are concerned. However, a downside to iXpenseIt is how very detailed it is; it takes a bit of work to really get the most out of the app [source: TiPb]. But when it comes to your finances, details are key, and this app can help you sort them out.
